Gift-laden Santa Clauses, full bags, mulled wine and glowing credit cards – Duesseldorf offers a unique mixture of experiences consisting of Christmas markets and shopping delights in the time of Advent. Right in the city centre, newly designed and lovingly decorated huts located at various city squares and streets invite you to take a memorable themed walk along the most popular shopping streets.

Never before has the magical atmosphere of the huts (“Hüttenzauber”) been so beautiful and unusual.

A stroll through the Duesseldorf city centre during the pre-Christmas time is a wonderful experience. Unlike in other cities, the atmospheric Christmas market in Dusseldorf is not staged centrally as a large funfair, but rather individually at different locations in the lively city centre: On the market square in front of the historic Town Hall (Rathaus) a number of artisans present their goods in nostalgic stalls. One of them is a nativity carver from Bethlehem who produces life-size figurines from olive wood. At the Flinger Strasse, the Christmas wares on offer are hand-painted replicas of Duesseldorf town houses.
In addition to the magical atmosphere of the huts (“Hüttenzauber”) at the “Stadtbrueckchen” (Little City Bridge), the art-nouveau “Engelchenmarkt” (Angel’s Market) causes a stir at the Heinrich-Heine-Platz in the Old City. Since its first appearance last year, it is regarded as one of the most beautiful Christmas location.

That is not surprising: handmade golden angels sit enthroned on champagne coloured timber huts. Solid brass fittings and fine decorations with impressive lighting send visitors “straight to heaven”.

Special Tip: a stroll along the world-famous Königsallee will be particularly enjoyable. The giant chestnut trees along the boulevard will radiate a seasonal brilliance thanks to thousands of lights.
